SRD R370 Grant — Full Eligibility Requirements

Complete list of requirements you must meet to qualify for the SASSA Social Relief of Distress grant in 2026.

You Must Meet ALL of These Requirements

  • ✓ Age: Between 18 and 59 years old. If you are 60+, you may qualify for the Old Age Grant instead.
  • ✓ Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, asylum seeker, or holder of a valid special permit.
  • ✓ Income: Must be unemployed or earning less than R624 per month. SASSA verifies this against SARS, UIF, and credit bureau records.
  • ✓ No Other Grants: Must not be receiving any other SASSA social grant (except the Child Support Grant, which you may receive in addition to the SRD).
  • ✓ No UIF: Must not currently be receiving unemployment insurance (UIF) benefits.
  • ✓ No NSFAS: Must not be receiving a National Student Financial Aid Scheme stipend.
  • ✓ Valid ID: Must have a valid South African ID number (13 digits). Asylum seekers need a valid permit number.

Verification Process: SASSA automatically cross-checks your information against the Department of Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, and credit bureau databases. This is why some applications take time to process — the system is verifying all your details.
