The Social Relief of Distress grant remains at R370/month for 2026/27.

Why Didn't the SRD Grant Increase?

Despite calls from civil society organisations to increase the SRD grant to at least R500, the 2026 National Budget kept it at R370/month. What's Next for the SRD Grant?

  • The SRD grant has been extended until 31 March 2027
  • President Ramaphosa confirmed at SONA 2026 that it will eventually become a permanent "livelihoods support grant"
  • Details on funding and implementation are deferred to the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement later in 2026

  • Enhanced fraud detection is expected to save R3 billion, which may fund future increases
